Website Do’s and Don’ts for small businesses
When was the last time you took a look at your company’s website? Is it easy to navigate? Is it attractive to look at? Here’s a short list of some basic website do’s and don’ts to move your website in the right direction. Stay tuned for upcoming blog posts and webinar later this month.
Do…
- Keep it simple! A website that is clean crisp and easy to navigate will keep your customers on your pages.
- Focus on your specialty! Even if you thousands of different types of products and services, focusing on the big picture and what’s most important to your company will help keep your site streamlined and on task.
- Trust a professional. Your website is your company’s face to the world. Hire a professional web designer to make sure your website is as professional as you are.
- Be consistent! If your links, buttons, menu and layout changes from page to page visitors will get frustrated and leave.
Here are some examples of some of my favorites:
Don’t…
- Use too many crazy graphics or flashy backgrounds. While graphics can be fun they can also make your website too busy to view and significantly increase load times.
- Use images in place of text. This can increase the load time of your site as well as decrease your link juice from keyword searches. Better to incorporate the images with the corresponding text.
- Make visitors hunt around. Every website should have a general search field, easy to navigate menu and the signup or login should always be on the front page.
- Write a novel on each page. Long rambling paragraphs with little or no break in the text or images will only test the attention span of your viewers. Remember to choose your words wisely and add design elements consistent with the feel of your site to keep it interesting.
This is just a start. Stay tuned for future posts on revamping your website. Later in may we’ll be hosting a free webinar on how to spring clean your website as well. To be added to the invitation for that event feel free to send me an email at aswanigan@everonit.com.
