Track Your Lost or Stolen Apple Devices
Last weekend a friend of mine was at a music festival in beautiful George, Washington at the Gorge Amphitheatre. His fun filled weekend of music and camping with friends was disrupted by a thief. Much to his chagrin he came back to his RV one evening to find that it was broken into, and his iPhone and MacBook Pro were stolen.
Unfortunately for him, tracking down his stolen property will be difficult since he did not have the proper tracking software tools in place. It was only after the crime had been perpetrated that he learned of the following tracking applications. Check out this recent news article where a laptop theif was caught becasue of the hidden tracking application.
For MacBooks, a third party company called Hidden makes an app that can locate a lost or stolen computer anywhere on the planet. The software can even collect photos of the thief, take screenshots of their activities and the company will even work with police to assist in recovering your stolen property.
Hidden will support your Apple computer for 15/year. They also have volume discounts for 5, 20 and 100 computers per year. For more information visit http://www.hiddenapp.com/.
For iPhones, iPad, and iPod touch, Apple has an application called MobileMe that tracks these devices if lost or stolen. MobileMe allows you to locate your iPhone or iPad on a map; display a message or play a sound to help you find it, set a passcode lock remotely and protect your privacy with a remote wipe. For more information on visit www.apple.com/mobileme/features/find-my-iphone.html
Have you ever lost been the victim or a stolen laptop, smartphone or iPhone? If so, where you able to get it back? Did you have tracking software in place? If not do you think these apps may have helped?
