Microsoft launches cloud computing initiative
You’ve probably heard the phrase Cloud Computing at some point in the last six months – it’s been a hot topic.
Well, Microsoft has now officially entered the cloud computing game, with the recent announcement of the Azure Cloud Computing Platform.
What is Azure?
it’s a platform technology and set of development tools that will allow software developers to leverage Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure to build, host and deliver cloud-based applications and services to their customers.
What that means in plain English is that the software development community is going to be able to develop a lot of new, cool applications for business and consumers to use – and they will most likely be developed as a service, similar to the Salesforce.com model.
To support this initiative, it is well-known in our industry that Microsoft is building massive data centers around the world to host all of these new applications and services. They are in a major race with Google and others, and are making a major shift in their business model to survive the threat of nimble competitors beating them to the punch.
This platform will create a whole new world of software, services, and tools for those of us in the small business marketplace. Even if it isn’t clear now, it’s a very exciting announcement!
