Blackberry Tour 9630 – My new favorite toy

I’ve been wanting a new phone for some time now. My old Samsung with the Microsoft operating system had pretty much become a paperweight over the last several months; I couldn’t get email, couldn’t look up contacts, and at times couldn’t even make or receive calls.

I put my phone through a pretty good workout each day, so I need a workhorse. I use it for calls, contacts, email, texting, calendar management, etc.

What I’ve never used my phone for in the past is for entertainment. I don’t take pictures, I don’t listen to music, and I don’t surf websites. I use it for business, and I want the core functionality to work really well, even if that means I have to sacrifice some bells and whistles.

After much debate over which phone to get (you don’t just get a phone her at Everon…it’s a big deal!), I got lucky and delayed just long enough that the new Blackberry Tour 9630 made it to the Verizon stores.

The reviews on this phone were nothing short of amazing, so I decided to give it a spin, knowing that I could return it within 30 days if I needed to. At this point, my personal review would be something like this:

“You’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands in order for me to give it up!”

I love the new Blackberry Tour! For those of you that don’t know me personally, when I love a product I am the dream customer – I tell everyone I know about it, almost to the point of annoyance. I have already seen several additional purchases of the Tour happen because of my zealotry.

So what’s so great about it?

  1. It works. Everything works, all the time. I’ve yet to have any hiccups. Compare that to my friends on iPhones that seem to drop every call!
  2. It looks great. It’s small, sleek, and light.
  3. The image quality is amazing. I can see the screen very clearly, even in direct sunlight.
  4. The camera and video quality is good. Probably not as great as the iPhone, but better than anything I’ve used before (picture of Boston taken with phone below), and I’m no longer carrying my regular camera or video camera with me anymore.
  5. It’s replaced my iPod. Now just carrying one device, that’s nice.
  6. It has a ton of useful apps. I can access Google Apps, Facebook, Twitter and a ton of other things. Perhaps not as many as the iPhone yet, but a recent article in Fortune suggests they are aggressively rolling out more.
  7. It works internationally. I don’t travel overseas that much, but when I do, it will be handy.

In short, I can’t recommend it highly enough.
