Android OS: Ice Cream Sandwich

Android had released it’s newest version of it’s mobile operating system and in keeping with their penchant for gustatory related code names it’s called Ice Cream Sandwich. All joking aside, this new OS features some pretty nifty upgrades and features.

New Interface-Android fans long fond of their Home, Back, Search, and Refresh buttons will have an alternative with ICS. Home, Refresh, and recent icons are available as softkeys. A hint that newer Android based phones may come button-less in the future. Also, like iOS the interface features a recently used pane of the last four apps that the current user has accessed for quick navigation.

Additionally, if you swipe sideways in an application, the phone will shut it down. Allowing for installations that are processing in the background to finish while conserving battery power, a constant concern of smart phone users.

Face Unlock-The most talked about new feature in ICS is the face unlock feature. The idea is simple, you save a profile picture and the phone’s security system associates it and requires it to unlock. Google is very upfront about the system not being 100% secure, but it’s easy to use and it’s novelty has excited Android fans.

Android NFC- NFC stands for Near Field Communication. NFC allows users with phones running the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android operating system can beam each other maps, files, and web links instantly from their phone. Us ers still running gingerbread are able to receive beams if they upgrade their system using this one simple step.
