What kindergartners can teach you about growing your business

Change is a stressful thing – just ask any kindergartner on their first day of school. Or perhaps it would be better to ask the parent of the kindergartner as they watch their child head to school for the first time. A few weeks ago I saw a new class of kindergartners get dropped off for school, and the emotions were really visible.

Sometimes change isn’t fun, but we all know it’s a necessary part of growth. Seeing kids skip home from a great day of school after a few weeks of getting settled in is proof of that.

Encountering change is inevitable for someone who seeks to grow. Learning to adapt quickly to a changing environment – and even learning to plan for it – can make the difference between success and failure.

How does this all relate to a blog post on an IT service company’s website? I’m glad you asked.

Let’s say that you’re the person in charge of setting the technology agenda at your organization. When an IT change occurs, it is either:

1. Something you anticipated and were able to plan for; or
2. Something that’s unavoidably forced upon you, so to speak

Ideally, with proper planning and a willingness to proactively change, we are able to increase the percentage of change from scenario #1 above, and decrease the percentage of change from scenario #2. To accomplish this, two things must happen:

1. You must have a thorough understanding of your company’s overall vision, and also have a good handle on how technology plays a part of it.
2. You must have a willingness to proactively put the right tech tools in place for your workers to pursue and realize this vision – even if it means change.

Putting forth the effort to plan out your business vision, along with committing to leveraging technology to help realize this vision will pay its dividends down the road. Is your current technology a match because it’s the ideal solution, or because it’s convenient? What will be your agent of change? Are you afraid to take a leap into something that’s new even if you know it will improve your business?

You must embrace technological advancements even when doing so seems a little scary and “unknown.” Truth is, the future of your company is unknown – just like a kindergartner’s. Embracing change might be frightening at first, but will eventually bring you just that much closer to greatness.
