Spring cleaning should apply to your office too

The time has finally come. The birds are beginning to chirp again, flowers are in bloom, and a new baseball season has just begun – spring is the time for new beginnings… and cleaning. Well, this should apply not only the cleanliness of your home, yard and car, but to your office space too. Whether you have an entire office to yourself or a small cubicle space, do yourself a big favor and clean it light of the spring time. Certain things must go:

Piles and piles of paper – No one needs a mountain of old print outs, especially not in this day and age where virtually everything is available – and can be stored – electronically. Of course there are those important documents that you must keep hard copies of, those can stay, but dump everything you don’t need. No one likes clutter.

Germs - Time to disinfect! Spring is a great time to clean the things that might get skimmed over during other times of the year. Disinfect the fax machine, doorknobs and regular cleaning ie wiping down your phone and work station should not only be done in the springtime, but should become a regular habit of yours if it is not already.

Old chairs – Not only are these sore on the eyes and uncomfortable to sit on – they are unhealthy! Decrepit chairs promote poor posture and are not conducive to a productive work environment. True, chairs are not cheap, but just consider how much time you spend in your work chair. This spring, upgrade chairs and other furniture pieces that have already seen their better days . Your employees – and their backs – will thank you.

Broken/outdated/extra equipment - You know the scenario. The office has “that table” that houses everything from old fax machines, broken phones, 62 tape dispensers and maybe around 17 hole punchers. Time to get rid this stuff, or at least remove it from your line of vision and pack it all up in boxes. What if the stuff is “still good” aka not broken and you don’t want to waste it? Look into donating it to a foundation in need in your area.

And to spice things up, you should…

Brighten - Maintaining a healthy mindset and positive outlook are linked to good health. Buy a pretty plant or flower arrangement for the office. If you’re like us in Boston, you know as much as the next person that winters can be long and cold. It is nice to celebrate the turning weather by bringing something that’s budding into your space to excite people for the seasons to come.
