Let Google tell you what your competitors are doing every morning….for free.

If you are like me it seems that there is never enough time in the day to complete everything you would like.  Between personal duties, conference calls, meetings and walking the dog my day tends to fly by.  In my personal life I am always looking to stay on top for my favorite sports teams and current events that I enjoy  and in my professional life it is imperative that I stay on top of what my competitors are doing, what my potential customers are doing and what is going on in my industry.  Google has found a way to give you some more time back in your day.

Not too long ago I begun using Google Alerts as my “Personal Assistant” and it has changed the way I get information on a daily basis.  I now come into the office every morning to see information about my industry and competitors without having to go do multiple searches daily.  It’s a huge time saver and you can setup as many alerts as you desire.  Google advertises the tool to have the following uses:

  • Monitoring a developing news story
  • Keeping current on a competitor or industry
  • Getting the latest on a celebrity or event
  • Keeping tabs on your favorite sports team

The tool couldn’t be any easier to use.  It’s one of those set it and forget it things until Google emails you every day, every week or as the news breaks, depending on what you select.  Simply go to www.google.com/alerts and type in your search term, the type of search (News, Blog, ect), select how often you would like to receive the information and indicate your email address.  Hit submit and watch all of the information that you care about come right to you.  Give it a try and I am sure that it will really improve your knowledge on your favorite search terms.
