What Can You Learn From Bill Gates’ Favorite Teacher – The Khan Academy?
Ok, not every post is going to be a tech tip, but this is pretty fascinating stuff. A recent article in Fortune Magazine brought attention to a site that Bill Gates is a huge fan of – the Khan Academy.
The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit online school that covers a lot of ground in very brief, bite-sized chunks of educational videos created by the founder, Salman Khan. Mr. Khan is a Harvard MBA and ex-hedge fund guy that has a knack for teaching and has put all of this content up for people to access for free. The content is good enough that apparently the Khan Academy is the most popular educational site on the web.
The following is an overview of the site, prepared by Mr. Khan himself:
I think this is a fascinating case study of the power of the Internet. It reminds me of Craig’s List, where a site that originally has no revenue model, becomes so powerful and popular that it is worth hundreds of millions of dollars or more.
It may not be there yet, but that’s my prediction. The Fortune Magazine article that introduced this site to me also introduced it to a mainstream public that will most likely result in dramatic growth in traffic for the site over the next year. Very cool.
It will be very interesting to see what he does with the site. He says he has no intentions to monetize it, but who could resist!? It will eventually be worth so much that it seems unlikely – and perhaps foolish – to not pursue the opportunity.
What does this have to do with you?
I think it’s always worthwhile to take a step back at least a couple of times a year to consider how the Internet could revolutionize your business. The major innovations on the Internet are not all done! Perhaps this site will spark some ideas for you.
- What could you give away for free that could draw the attention of your prospects?
- How could you use the Internet to distribute your products or services in innovative ways?
- How could you use the Internet to market your business in new ways?
The answers may not be obvious right away, but I’m sure there is something to learn!
Mike
