Pay-as-you-go computing may soon be a reality

Microsoft applied for a patent on metered, pay-as-you-go computing; this patent application was published on Christmas Day. U.S. patent application number 20080319910. What exactly is “Pay-as-you-go” computing, you ask?

Microsoft’s pay-as-you-go vision calls for a basic, standard model of a PC to be either given away by a high up in the supply chain (either that, or sold at an extremely heavily subsided price). Then, end users will pay in hourly increments to use the computers. Charges will be calculated by adding up the following: A one time required fee, the length of time used, and performance levels of computer used. Performance levels include things like memory, service and software options, etc. Naturally, as you tack on more options, the price of your PC will go up per billing period as well.

Please note that is will actually be possible for the PC to end up costing more to the end user in the end when compared with the one-time-flat cost associated with purchasing a PC today. However, Microsoft argues that end users will greatly benefit, as their PC will now have a longer useful life. Moreover, this model will allow businesses manage their computer budgets as an operating expense as opposed to shoveling out tons of $$$ each time it is time to upgrade.
