Cloud Computing Essentials

Cloud computing has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional IT practices for businesses and organizations of all sizes. Increasing improvements in software, hardware, and network aspects of computing are making the choice to move your organization’s information system to the cloud a practical option rather than a risky venture. The concept of the cloud itself continues to gain momentum as reliable choice rather just a passing fad.

A generally agreed upon core concept of cloud computing is viewing Information System needs through the “as a service” paradigm. Therefore  the three levels of cloud computing Include:

Software as a service (SaaS) where the user has access to specific applications hosted by the provider’s cloud.

 Think web-based email

Infrastructure as a service (Iaas) where the user essential builds applications  on a provider maintained infrastructure having access to source code and other tools to build custom programs for their organization.

Think Netflix-They rent servers from Amazon Web Services to host some for their streaming content. They can scale up or down based on need, on demand.

Platform as a service (Paas) where the user has multi-layered information systems connected through networks they specify storage space and calibration needs.

Think Google App Engine-Hosted storage, bandwidth, and CPU cycles for your hosted application.  networkedblogs.com uses Google App Engine

Given this model, cloud computing can offer flexibility and service schedules based on a wide array of consumer needs. Rather than considering information management needs in the static model, choices can be made based on your need and desire to maintain your network or farm the operation out on a pay as you go basis.

What cloud solutions does your business use?

Cloud Computing has been a buzzword for quite some time. It describes a new consumption and delivery model for IT services based on the Internet, and it typically involves the provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources as a service over the Internet.
